8 Steps to Going Custom

Don’t confuse designing your own wedding stationery with a DIY project. It’s all about working with a professional stationer to master the perfect look. Maybe you’re a visual person who has a specific creation in mind; or you’ve shopped around and realized that the options out there — as many as there are — aren’t the right match for you and your day. Custom-made stationery can be the key to rounding out your wedding’s style. But before committing to this project, be aware of your wedding budget and the time the process will take. Trish Kinsella, stationery expert and president of Dauphine Press, gave us the inside scoop on how to master a custom job.

  8 Steps to Going Custom
Step 1: Think About Your Vision. Take some time and dream up what you’d like your wedding invitation to look like: soft colors, letterpress font, photo embellishments. Which hues and overarching style (modern or traditional) visually fit you as a couple? Ideally, you should have a general idea before speaking with a professional. “Think about the words you use in conversations with friends and family, when describing your wedding style and the vision you have for your celebration,” says Kinsella. Is it Hollywood glamour or rustic elegance? You want to be prepared to tell your story and share it with the designer you select.
Step 2: Set Your Design Plan. Decide how far you’ll want to take your customization with colors, patterns, and layers of paper. More complicated projects may demand a more skillful team of professionals. Do you want a combination of specialty printing methods ? Is the design you’re dreaming up unique or does your custom job involve a simple letterpressed drawing of a daisy, your favorite flower? Maybe you want a personalized invite but don’t have a specific idea. Your best bet is to consult a professional who will guide you through the process.

Step 3: Choose a Color. Your wedding colors are the strand that runs through all the elements of your day. Decide how you will incorporate these hues into your paper products: Will you use a colored font, a colored pattern, or colored paper? A mix of the three? Can’t settle on one color? Then select two. Pick a pair that will be complementary, but don’t settle on pale pink if fuchsia has always been your favorite. Most important, examine how each color looks on the paper stock. Don’t assume that aquamarine font will look the same on white as it does on cream.
Step 4: Decide on a Motif. Do you want a monogram or another symbol woven throughout the day’s festivities? If so, consider adding these themes to your wedding stationery. For example, an invite to a tropical wedding might include seashells and coral. Take a look through your designer’s books and tag past work that you think might mimic your own style.
Step 5: Select the Size and Shape. Believe it or not, the envelope drives the size of the invitation, says Kinsella, so your design needs to fall within your chosen envelope formats (square, rectangular, skinny rectangular). And the envelope shape sets the tone for your wedding style (an unusual size signifies an untraditional wedding).

Step 6: Set Deadlines. Know the time frame you are working with before you begin. Set a realistic deadline that starts with your intended mailing date, plus the time needed for assembly and calligraphy. Ask about the turnaround time and charge for proofs. Once the job is approved, how long will it take to print? These aren’t necessarily the fun aspects of the process, but if you don’t think about them now, they’ll only stress you out later.
Step 7: Discuss the Printing Process. Before you seal the deal, ask about the entire team. Who does the printing? Will your designer do a final check when your job is being printed to ensure everything is exactly as you approved? Will you see a final proof? Is it the right paper quality for your design? “A fabulous design can fall flat on the wrong paper,” says Kinsella. Who assembles the invitations? Does the designer do this for free or does a fee apply? How many revisions can you make? Know from the start about design fees and proof charges. Get a written contract that includes an estimate and timeline. You should also expect to make a deposit to start the project. A comprehensive design plan will eliminate too many changes that may accumulate. Most designers allow for one to two rounds of edits — extra costs can be substantial. Be organized from the beginning and you will minimize errors and unexpected charges.
Step 8: Finalize the details. Taking the customization route can be truly rewarding — just remember to take it one step at a time, because even the font can set a certain tone. Don’t force something that you don’t love at first glance in hopes that it will grow on you. Think of the big picture and realize that each element plays a role that can be carried through your entire celebration.

Rachel + Paul | Pnina Tornai Wedding from Morgan Lynn Photography

Pnina Tornai | PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com

Rachel + Paul’s New Orleans wedding was a rich and fun-filled affair complete with delicious food, an old mansion venue and a breathtaking Pnina Tornai wedding dress. It’s hard to believe that ‘Plan A’ was to have a romantic flower covered outdoor ceremony…when rain moved the nuptials indoors, it made for wonderfully intimate and charming ‘I Dos’ and a few memorable bride and groom ad libs too.  So sweet, enjoy!

The Ceremony
My husband and I met in New York City and we live in Brooklyn, but I’m from Mississippi and went to school in New Orleans. I knew I didn’t want to have the wedding here, not only because of expense but also because, at heart, I’m a Southern girl. New Orleans has such a magical vibe and ambience; it’s unlike any other place in the world. I wanted to play up the city’s old school but backwater charm in executing our wedding. And anyway, none of our friends had any complaints about heading to the Big Easy! For many of them – including guests from Japan, Hawaii, France and Australia – it was their first time not only in New Orleans, but also in the South. To play that up and ensure they got the most out of their visit, we also had Southern-themed activities  – a swamp tour and a crawfish boil – the day before the wedding.

Unfortunately, it rained at exactly the moment we needed it not to rain for our outdoor ceremony, so we had to relocate from a romantic, flower-covered gazebo into a room inside our venue, which was also the location of our reception. But we improvised and rolled with the punches, and the tight quarters made the experience seem even more intimate. We kept things short and sweet.  The idea was to capitalize on party and socializing time, since we had an allotted amount of time at the venue to do with what we wanted. We did have a few fun ceremony bloopers, though – notably, kissing as soon as I arrived at the altar (whoops!) and my husband proclaiming, “Nailed it!” after our officiant pronounced us man and wife – a phrase that became the theme of the evening.

The Reception
The venue was a resplendent Southern mansion under centuries-old oak trees lining St. Charles. We had both an indoor and outdoor area, an upstairs and a downstairs, so our 175 guests had plenty of places to explore, dance or find a quiet moment. For flowers, we had a wild, True Blood-inspired look, including cypress knees, Spanish moss and carnivorous pitcher plants. We began the reception with a jazz band, which I found via my alma mater, Loyola (the university has a great jazz music program). The jazz band played old New Orleans favorites while guests enjoyed fried soft-shell crabs, boiled shrimp, an oyster bar, crawfish etoufee, shrimp creole, boudin balls, jambalaya and other Southern delicacies. My husband and I performed a choreographed first dance to an artsy remix of the Jurassic Park theme song (love that movie! plus we don’t take ourselves too seriously…), after which a DJ friend from NYC took over, spinning remixes of The Cure and LCD sound system. We ended the party with Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” with everyone belting out the lyrics ballad-style while slow dancing.

Rachel’s Dress Search
So many dresses!  I went to four different salons and tried on probably 6-12 dresses at each place. The one I settled on was actually one I encountered in my first trip to the bridal salon, but I felt compelled to shop around more (thinking it was kind of like how you’re supposedly not supposed to marry the first guy you date!). That first date with my dress, however, stuck with me…and the more dresses I saw, the surer I became that this was the one.

Immediately after slipping it on and lacing up the corset in the back, I knew it was a winner. The looks of awe on my sister and one of my bridesmaid’s faces told me that they concurred. It perfectly fit my body as well as my personality – delicate and girly yet edgy and different. It also felt like an excellent match for my wedding venue, which was elegant, charming, sophisticated and beautiful. However, even as I became more certain that this gown was the one, I knew it was a bit out of my price range. Luckily, I spoke with the owner of Kleinfeld’s about my concerns and he wound up giving me a generous discount. That was all the prompting I needed, and I immediately said yes to the dress!

Why Rachel Decided to Sell Her Wedding Dress
Even with the discount, this was a very big purchase for me – one that I could only justify by deciding ahead of time that I would try to sell the dress after the wedding. I also know that I’ll never get another chance to wear the dress again. Why keep something so beautiful and fine locked up in a closet? Nothing would make me happier than for this dress to be given a second opportunity to make a bride feel perfect on her wedding day.

Kris + Darren | Temperley London Wedding by Daring Wanderer

Temperley London Guinevere | PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com

Not only did Kris and Darren’s wedding take place at a venue unlike any we’ve ever seen, it was filled with handmade, homegrown details. Flowers and cake created by the bride’s sisters. A tent raised by the Darren (with help from his new family members) that kept the reception cozy into the night. A band that played their own tunes as a grand entrance to the ceremony, cocktail poured by the guests themselves But that exquisite lace gown Kris wore? That was designed by Temperley London. And what a stunner Kris was in it.

The Ceremony
No shot lists were made, no makeup artists or hairstylists were hired. Everything was created with our own two hands. I got ready with my twin sister in a little cottage in the woods, while our other siblings and Darren put the final touches on the amazing sailcloth tent reception up on a hill, overlooking Nicasio Valley. After their first venue location fell through, we were lucky enough to have a retired coworker offer up his land for the event and what a spectacular backdrop it created. A four-piece jazz band played their own versions of modern hits as they led the crowd down the hill to the ceremony location.

The Reception
Under a moon-lit sailcloth tent, guests partied late into the night dancing and catching up with old friends. The California farm-to-table cuisine was colorful, simple and delicious. Cocktails were made by the guests themselves, and the incredible wine was sourced from Joel Gott Winery. Guests were driven to their hotels and b&bs by Vantigo Volkswagen buses, where the party continued well into the morning.

Galia Lahav | Designer Profile

1

To call a Galia Lahav wedding dress extravagant does not even begin to do the design justice.

Galia Lahav Loretta Wedding Dress

Custom, handmade and couture, each step of the gown from sketch to embellishment is done on-site at Galia Lahav’s headquarters in Tel Aviv. Designed by Galia herself along with assistant designer Sharon Sever, these gowns do not skimp on originality or quality.

For Galia Lahav, the drama is all in the back. Illusion and barely there backs, one of the biggest recent wedding dress trends, feature heavily. Combined with cutout panels and cascading trains of silk tulle, often cathedral length…or longer, these dress features all create a statement without overwhelming the bride.

Galia Lahav Patchouli Wedding Dress

Early in Galia’s career, she became known for working with lace appliques and embroidery, and the tradition continues.Layered lace creates a lavish, luxurious look. Beading and pearls have joined the embellishment party, however, and are welcome members, creating sparkling creations that are perfect for evening weddings and black-tie affairs.

The glamour is all in the details, and this is what sets Galia Lahav designs apart. Looking at the sensual form-fitted dresses, it is no surprise her designs show up often on red carpets and award shows.

Galia-Lahav

Mermaid and trumpet shapes create a fashion-forward design. Given that Galia Lahav gowns are all about the fit, it’s no surprise this curve-hugging silhouette figures heavily in these sexy designs.

Past collections have represented the classic glamour of the 1920s with sleek shapes, Art Deco-inspired symmetry and heavy beading and embellishment. More recently, bohemian fantasy and fairy tale-style romance was represented with full skirts and sheer panels in blush pinks, baby blues and ivories.

Galia Lahav Antonia Wedding Dress

If you crave a statement gown that is as personalized as you are, Galia Lahav may be the ideal wedding dress designer for you. Daring, well-designed and detailed, these gowns are perfect for confident brides willing to wear a little luxury and take a fashion-forward leap on her wedding day.

Ti’tiana + Brent | Berta Bridal Wedding from Auerlius Joshua Galloway Photography

Berta Bridal | PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com

Ti’tiana + Brent’s classic country club wedding in North Carolina was an elegant event complete with crisp grey and white linens, romantic white florals and a stunning Berta Bridal wedding gown.  We love that today’s featured bride wanted a bridal look that would make her husband say, ‘God she’s sexy…but so elegant!’.  So sweet!  This dress is wonderfully detailed and so figure flattering.  Enjoy!

The Ceremony
We had a very intimate and naturally elegant ceremony that took place at a beautiful country club. We had flowing white linens and the center aisle was outlined with a dozen red roses and miniature glass vases with floating candles. Our love zone (what we called our altar) was in front of a huge rustic fireplace with a wood burning fire and candles and flowers draped along the mantle. We wanted our nuptials to be traditional and unique so we exchanged vows and we also wrote our own ‘expressions of love’ that we shared after our exchange of rings.

The Reception
Our reception was elegant and playful and took place indoors in a beautiful room with a veranda that overlooked the greenway. The decor was grey, white and red and designed by my mother…everything from the flowers to the linen was all her doing, which made the atmosphere so much more blessed, knowing she created the space from a place of love. The rest of the night was filled with amazing food.  We decided to go with a four-course dinner and included a candy bar since we are obsessed with sweets.  There were outrageously funny toasts from our parents, my sisters and the best man. The night ended with a couple fun dances, cupid shuffle of course and the wobble, cake cutting and a wonderful sparkler send away.

Vera Wang Josephine | PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com

Mallory and Adam chose Adam’s parent’s backyard in Ontario to get married at their intimate, family-filled wedding. These two ski bums elected to go for a woodsy, wilderness inspired wedding with rustic touches and a lot of fun ski-themed ones, too. Mallory was dressed in a tulle Vera Wang Josephine gown, opting for a halter neck. It was not her first choice thinking the style would not look beautiful on her, but it ended up being a stunning look.

The Ceremony
We were married in the forest at Adam’s parents’ place in Ontario. Since we live in B.C. and were planning a wedding in only seven months (Adam didn’t want to wait over a year and a half to have an Ontario summer wedding for 2015), we pushed it as far in the summer as possible. Our parents worked long hours, clearing a spot in the over grown forest for us to get married with a beautiful corn field poking through the backdrop of trees. Our ceremony was under the trees, with a warm summer’s wind blowing down the aisle we cleared. In front of close family and friends we shared our own vows.

The Reception
The reception was in the field surrounded by the forrest and Adam’s mom’s beautiful sunflower gardens. My mom put together all the decoration, or mason jars, tea lights, rustic logs, roses and baby’s breath flowers. We started of the speeches by sabering off the top of a Champagne bottle with an alpine ski (we are avid skiers) and doing shot ski shots with our wedding party, family and guests.

Instead of a cake, we had 400 cupcakes that my Auntie Anne made! My dad had made this beautiful cupcake three-tiered cupcake tray out of logs from the forest. There were six different flavours in regular and gluten-free floor. We also had a dessert table that my mom and grandma baked for: mini cheesecakes, peanut butter cookies, chocolate chip cookies, pies, brownies…and so much more!

Mallory’s Dress Search
I spent two days trying on dresses while my sister was visiting from Ontario. I said I would try anything on except a halter. In the end my sister begged me to try on a halter because of the amazing back it had…and I fell in love with it! It was everything I wanted, a cool back and poufy tulle bottom!

Why Mallory Decided to Sell Her Wedding Dress
I decided to sell my dress because I had so many people saying they wanted to find something like it. It was a hard decision, but if I can help someone else feel beautiful on their wedding day, then it’s worth it!

Top Wedding Invitation Tips

 Top Wedding Invitation Tips
1: Define Your Wedding Style. The invitation is your guests’ first peek at your wedding style. Along with listing the location and time of day, the invitation — and, more specifically, its style — hints to the formality of your wedding. You should have an idea of the type of event you’re throwing — classic and elegant, or glam and modern — before you start shopping for stationery, so you can choose an invitation style that hits the same note. Then browse wedding invitation photos and stationers’ websites and gather inspiration so you can give your stationer an idea of what you like.

2:Know Your Colors. Think about your wedding colors too — you may want to incorporate your colors and a motif into your wedding invitations and then carry both through to the rest of your wedding paper (like the escort cards, menu cards and ceremony programs) for a cohesive look. While ivory, cream or white card stock paired with a black or gold font is the classic choice for formal wedding invitations, you can also brighten your invites with colorful or metallic fonts, paper stock, envelopes and liners. Just keep readability in mind when choosing your colors (keep reading for more on that).

3:Play With the Shape and Size. A 4.5-inch-by-6.25-inch rectangular card is the traditional size and shape for wedding invitations. But couples are also channeling more playful or modern vibes with circular, scalloped and square invitations. Just keep in mind: Veering away from the standard envelope size can increase the postage — bulky or extra-large invites may cost more to send. Top Wedding Invitation Tips

4:Make Sure They’re Legible. As you consider colors and patterns, don’t forget about the text — the information you put on the invitation is the whole point of sending it out in the first place. Your local stationer can help, but in general, avoid light ink on light backgrounds and dark ink on dark backgrounds. Yellow and pastels are tough colors to read, so if you’re going with those, make sure the background contrasts enough for the letters to pop, or work those colors into the design rather than the text. Also, be wary of hard-to-read fonts like an overly scripted typeface — you don’t want to sacrifice readability.

5:Choose Your Words Wisely. Learn the rules to wording your invitation. Traditionally, whoever is hosting is listed first on the invitation. Customarily, you should spell everything out, including the time of the ceremony. On classic wedding invitations, there’s always a request line after the host’s name — something like so and so “request the honor of your presence.” (Read Wording Invitation Samples for all the details.)

6:Don’t Crowd the Card. List only the key points on your invitation: ceremony time and location, the hosts, the couple’s names, the dress code (optional) and RSVP information. Trying to squeeze too much onto the invitation card can make it harder to read — and it won’t look as elegant. Leave things like directions to your wedding venue and details about postwedding activities for your wedding website and/or print them on separate enclosure cards. One piece of information that doesn’t belong anywhere on your suite: where you’re registered. The only acceptable place to list registry information is on your wedding website.

7:Start Early. Your save-the-dates should go out six to eight months before the wedding. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks — or longer, depending on how fancy you go — to print them. While your save-the-dates don’t have to match your invites, ordering everything from one stationer can save you money and make the invitation process easier on you. So start scouting stationers 9 to 11 months before the wedding. Aim to order your invitations about four to five months out so they’re ready to mail six to eight weeks before the wedding. If you’re having a destination wedding or marrying over the holidays, send out your invites even earlier (10 to 12 weeks before the wedding).

8:Get Your Dates Straight. Include your RSVP information on the bottom right corner of your invitation or on a separate enclosure, and be sure to make the deadline no more than three or four weeks after guests receive the invitations — check with your caterer first to find out when they’ll need the final headcount. The more time you give guests to reply, the more likely they are to forget, and you’ll need time to put together the seating chart. Plus, your final count may affect the number of centerpieces and other decor elements, which your vendors will need to finalize a few weeks before the wedding.

9:Consider Costs. The price per invite can vary widely — anywhere from $1 to more than $100. It all depends on the design, ink, typeface, printing process, paper and quantity. Top-of-the-line papers, color ink, formal printing techniques (like letterpress and engraving) and custom design will add to your costs, as will decorative extras like envelope liners and multiple enclosures. That’s why it’s important to research your options ahead of time — so you can pick your priorities, whether it’s sophisticated printing and a custom design or multiple enclosures. Also, if you’re planning to hire a calligrapher, look into the cost of that (think: $2 to $8 per envelope) at the same time you’re choosing your invitations, so you can account for it in your stationery budget.

10:Get Your Envelopes Early; Have a Top Wedding Invitation Tips   . When you order your invitations, see if you can take the envelopes home immediately (or as soon as possible). That way, if you’re having someone other than your stationer (say, a calligrapher) print the return addresses on your envelopes (most stationers print the return addresses for little or no charge; it’s often even included in the suite’s price), they can get a head start. While you don’t have to hire a calligrapher to address your envelopes, we highly recommend it — it looks beautiful and makes an elegant first impression.
