3 Ways To Rock A Vintage Wedding Dress

Vintage wedding dresses are all the rage right now and we can’t get enough of them. Intricate lace, Art Deco accessories and heirloom jewelry give an instant elegant feel and are a fun nod to the traditions and fashions of the past. (PS: If you’re looking for wedding dress designers with seriously pretty vintage designs, try the new dress lines from Romona Keveza, Monique Lhuillier and Claire Pettibone.)

While wearing a vintage-style wedding dress can be totally unique and beautiful, have you ever noticed that a vintage-style bridal look can look a little too much like a costume rather than a pretty wedding dress? We brought this up to one of our favorite stylists, Annie Cavallo of WellStyled Events (who, by the way, just happened to style our fabulous spring issue of The Knot magazine!) and she armed us with lots of good insider tips to pulling off a vintage ensemble. The top three are right here!

1. Accentuate Your Neckline

Think less about tulle layers and more about interesting details or necklines that allow you to add statement accessories, Cavallo advises. If you’re repurposing your mom’s or grandma’s dress you’ve got a head-start already, but if you are buying a new dress and still want the “old feel” of an heirloom, look for lace gowns with a slim silhouette.

2. Try A Whimsical Veil or Hair Piece

A bird cage veil is the quintessential vintage look, according to Cavallo. The best part is that there are a ton of different bird cage veil styles to fit just about any vintage dress or neckline style. For hair accessories and veils, the old-fashioned touches are in the fun details like lace, feathers or a brooch that might even be your grandmother’s.

3. Consider Embellished Shoes

Shoes with beading or crystal embellishment will give your look an opulent boost and play off the intricate details of a lace gown. If you’re in the market for colorful bridal shoes, think blush or gold—they’re still fun and feminine, but feel softer and more antique than bolder hues, Cavallo says.
